Reading at early age guides teen's Eagle Scout project

Johnny Stevens III found a way to create an Eagle Scout project that would help his old elementary school. Johnny, 14, is the son of Johnny Stevens II and Tonette Soda-Stevens of Des Moines' south side. He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 40, led by Scoutmaster Steve Feeney. Stevens' dad is the assistant Scoutmaster. The teen's project was to build a wood bookcase that sits in the library at Jefferson Elementary School, 2425 Watrous Ave. The Eagle Scout designation is the highest rank for members of Boy Scouts of America. Johnny joined Cub Scouts when he was a first-grader, and his early love of reading helped inspire him to create a bookcase for the school, said Soda-Stevens. "He started reading before kindergarten," she said, adding that she and her husband started reading to both of their sons when they were 6 months old.
