Area's largest class of Eagle Scouts, Silver Award winners, honored at Boy Scouts gala

With a gigantic U.S. flag for a backdrop and a stirring rendition of the national anthem filling the ballroom, patriotic sentiments were soaring at Tuesday night’s Building Character Celebration at DeVos Place. But Justin Lieffers’ thoughts were miles away — about 250,000, to be exact. The 18-year-old Dorr Township resident was recalling 11 of the 12 astronauts who walked on the moon had achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in their earlier years. Now, Lieffers can count himself a part of that elite group — Eagle Scout, that is. Lieffers was among the 260 who were the largest class in West Michigan history to become Eagle Scout and Silver Award recipients, the highest ranks in scouting, during the Gerald R. Ford Council of the Boys Scouts of America Building Character Celebration.
